Irish Rugby not what it used to be?

Last Saturday, a more than dubious try saved us from what could have been an embarassing defeat by Italy. Thankfully, an additional three points from a penalty meant that we would finally have won in any event. One has to admit that the Italian team was quite packed with Argentinian-born and indeed one New Zealand-born player. However, all commentators seemed to agree that a lot of work needs to be done before our next match. Scotland pulled off an impressibe win against France, and England beat last years grand-slammers, Wales. Interesting times lie ahead!

Emily Smith sings a beautiful Irish song

You can read the article about Emily Smith's concert in the Basque version of Cara. It has been an excellent concert of the Scottish folk singer Emily Smith with McClenna and Byrne with the violin and guitars. Moreover, the first song was an Irish one. Do not forget that next month Mary Black will come back to Bilbao. As a Cara member is a must to be there in that day. Be ready.

Irish baby names

This site CSO.ie is useful for facts and figures about Ireland. I have shown the link bellow to the CSO release showing the most common Irish names. I think there is a list of top 100 in this somewhere. Maybe you can find equivalents in Basque/Spanish and write a little piece showing what is common or different in both places.

Take a look at the most used Irish baby names (it is a PDF file): Babynames.pdf

Thanks to Cavahooah.com website for the photo of the baby

Celtic languages and Basque

I usually read an interesting Basque weblog of a friend of mine titled Balbula. The web site is published in Blogger and the author is my pal Jesus Rubio. Rubio has written an excellent article about the languages of Europe and the main syntactic features of them. We do not have to forget that in Europe there are more languages than English, German, Spanish, Italian and French. The languages of less spoken territories and more spread ones have been drawn in the figure below, taken from his blog. Take a look at it and realize where are Irish and Basque. That must give strenght to encourage members of Cara to support our national languages. Click on the map to see clearly:

Celtic and folk music at Euskalduna Palace

I have posted a new article in the Spanish version of Cara about the next concerts of folk singers like Mary Black (Éire), Emily Smith (Alba) and Waterson-Carthy (UK). Take a look at it if you like Celtic and folk music. The concert costs 11€ and if you have the card called Club Lector 10 you can get a 20% discount.

New blood in the board of directors

Tras la asamblea, dos cervezasHere we are, old and new members of Cara, that is to say, blended blood in the same body. Rocco, Armand and others leave the board of directors and new blood is coming from this year on. Here you have the snapshot taken by the new president of the association. Cara is an excellent association thanks to the job done by Rocco, Mikel, Oscar, Eoin, Mella, Armand, Mike, Eamon, Juanjo and José. They all were the first members of this association and we must show them our gratitude. Thanks a lot. Before finishing this post, I would inform all members that in the next days we will see two new versions of this page in Basque and in Spanish. The last version in Gaelic will be available as soon as we can. The new members of the board of directors can send us a message by email so Séamus Pálás can collect all your email addresses.
